Emily paid cash for breakfast, and they all got back into the Cadillac to continue west. It was another beautiful fall morning. The air was crisp, but the sun was out, and it felt twenty degrees warmer than it really was. Will flipped up his rearview mirror to avoid the glare of the sun rising behind them.

Millie and Gary once again turned on Millie’s iPad, and began debating which Disney movie to watch. Millie wanted Frozen for the fourteenth time.

Even Gary was ready to move on to something else. “C’mon, Mills, anything else. How about Batman?”

“I know,” Millie said. “We can watch Frozen 2!”

Gary and Will both groaned. But Millie was already pulling the movie up.

Will glanced over and saw that Emily was nervously looking at her phone once again.

“I thought you were going to toss that,” Will said.

“I know,” Emily replied. “I know I should, but somehow I just can’t. What if my mom tried to reach me?”

“Any new messages from Mr. Wonderful?” he asked.

“No,” Emily answered. “He actually stopped calling altogether. I don’t know what I hope to find by staring at the screen. Maybe a text from Stuart saying he’s been wrong all along, and of course it’s okay if I want to leave him and move somewhere else.”

“Maybe we should stop and buy a lottery ticket instead.” Will laughed.

“Yeah, probably better odds on that,” Emily said with a sad smile.

“So, tell me Emily Maldonado’s life story.”

“Not much to tell,” Emily said. “I grew up poor, moved to New York, married an asshole, got rich, and I’m trying to undo it all.”

“Aw, I think there’s more to it than that. C’mon. We have a long drive. What were you like as a kid?”

“Ha. I was a handful,” Emily began. “To hear my mom tell it, I was in the ‘terrible twos’ for about four years. But I had to grow up fast. My dad committed suicide when I was only three. And Gary wasn’t yet one. My mom did the best she could with a high school education and two kids. But we didn’t have much.

She worked at a hair salon—still does. As soon as I was able to help out much at all, I became Gary’s ‘surrogate mom,’ if you will. I fixed him breakfast and got him ready for school. I fixed his lunches and made sure he came home after school. I did my best to get him to do his homework, but since I wasn’t very good at doing my own, he didn’t pay a lot of attention to me on that score.”

“Looks like you’re still taking care of him.”

“I guess. I thought those days were over, but maybe not.”

“How did you end up in New York?”

“The classic ‘I’ll be discovered and be a big star’ story.” Emily said. “I always loved acting, singing, and dancing. I was in all the high school plays, and everyone said I was really talented. I believed them—probably foolishly. So I went to New York after high school to prove myself.
